Instructions

  1. Preparation

    • 1

Survey friends by e-mail to find those interested in playing poker.

    • 2

Invite six to nine of those interested. Ask them to bring friends to the game.

    • 3

Choose to play a simple poker variation that people already know or can learn easily.

    • 4

E-mail, in advance, the rules to the players who are unfamiliar with the game.

    • 5

Buy at least two decks of playing cards and some poker chips.

    • 6

Prepare snacks the day before and set them out 1 hour before people arrive.

    Play

    • 7

      Seat everyone around the table.

    • 8

State the rules and house policies briefly.

    • 9

      Shuffle and deal the cards.

    • 10

Rotate the deal so that everyone has this responsibility.

    End of the Evening

    • 11

Survey the players to find out who would be interested in playing regularly.

    • 12

Create an e-mail list of those players.

Tips & Warnings

  • Invite more people than necessary. Invariably, people will cancel, and it is more fun to play with at least six players.

  • Seat people who don't know each other next to each other. Home poker games are a great way to meet people.

  • Allow players to take breaks so that they can have conversations away from the table and play doesn't get too monotonous.

  • Try to organize poker games on a regular basis, such as once a month.

  • Gambling in your home is illegal in most states. Check out state law on this subject.

This is a great way to start a little Home Poker Tourney. Unfortunately people just don't realize how fun and exciting these Poker Events really are. You can even set one of these up with two Poker Tables. One for the serious players and a learning table for those just getting started. Kudos great 5star prose!

If you're playing for fun and put in only $5-$20 a piece for the night, instead of making the chip denominations small (5, 25, 50 cents) make them larger ($1, $5, $25) and give each person $100-$200 worth of chips. It's more fun because you feel like every move is more important because there's a lots of money on the table. At the end, just convert the money back into the small amounts you started with.

Try playing UNO for the "shy" poker players; house rules are easy to make and fun. The second table can be poker, dealer's choice. Have each guest bring music they like and a food item - we've had sushi, shrimp, and fruit platters show up!
