Water births, say advocates, make labor less painful for the mother and ease an infant's transition into the world outside the womb.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Decide if you'd like to have your baby at home using a birthing tub or at a hospital or birthing center that's equipped with tubs for birthing.

  2. Step 2

Determine if there's a facility in your area, if you'd like to give birth at a hospital or center.

  3. Step 3

Find a midwife or obstetrician who's experienced with water births.

  4. Step 4

Rent a tub for a home water birth well in advance of your due date. Set it up and learn how to use it so you're ready when your baby is.

Tips & Warnings
  • As labor progresses, don't be afraid to change your mind about where you want to give birth. Some women find it's more comfortable to have their feet squarely on the ground during delivery.
  • At some hospitals, women with complications like high blood pressure or those whose membranes rupture early in labor are not allowed to give birth while in the water.
  • Some health experts question the safety of giving birth under water. Make sure you're working with an obstetrician or midwife who is experienced and comfortable with water births.
  • A baby should never be left under water after it's born, but lifted immediately into the mother's arms.
  • If you have any questions or concerns, contact your midwife or obstetrician before engaging in any activity related to birth. This information is not intended as a substitute for professional medical advice or treatment.
