1
Check with the school to be sure you understand its gift policy. Some schools forbid gifts altogether; others discourage them or set a dollar limit on their value.
-
2
Check with your child to make sure she wants to give a gift. If your child doesn't, but you do, make it clear that the gift is from you.
-
3
If your child does want to give a gift, involve her in the selection process. Start by asking your child what the teacher might like.
-
4
Shop with the idea that the gift is a token of your child's appreciation for the teacher's efforts. Think small and inexpensive.
-
5
Better yet, encourage your child to make a gift. Even a first-grader can frame her picture with Popsicle sticks, and those are the types of gifts teachers treasure long after they've eaten the last box of chocolates.

Shopping at the last minute? Personalize that "World's Greatest Teacher" coffee mug with a handmade card from your youngster.

Tips & Warnings
Be sensitive to diversity issues. Unless your child attends a parochial school, avoid gifts associated with specific religious observances, such as Christmas tree ornaments or menorah candles.
Remember, it's the thought that counts!

umm, sorry, have bad news for you. As a five year teacher I can let you in on a little secret. Most of us in elementary schools do not keep homemade stuff like popsicle stick frames, hand prints, pictures, etc. Scrapbooks get put on a shelf only to be taken down when we are retiring and tossing stuff. Nor do we keep the little figurines, bookmarks, etc that say "world's best teacher". Those get used in the white elephant gift exchange at Christmas time. Coffee mugs? nope. they go in the cupboard in the staff room with the 89 other mugs received over the last five years. Want to give a really good present? GIFT CARD for the nearest coffee house, craft store or teacher store. THAT will get you points with your teacher! -

For female teachers, we've have found that hand cream (teachers are always using their hands something!) is very much appreciated. Many stores like the Body Shop and Bath & Body Works offer their own extensive lines of these type of products. -

Sometimes you don't need a questionare to find out what a teacher likes. A lot of times what they like is right in the room. You just need to know where to look. Of course it doesn't always work. But it does if you know what to look for. -

You know what-sometimes tangible objects as gifts are unnecessary, especially for adults. They may only want to see you get good grades on your report card and lead a great life. Sometimes a student gives a teacher more than the student can know by teaching their teacher so much during the school year they had that teacher.
