Check with the school to be sure you understand its gift policy. Some schools forbid gifts altogether; others discourage them or set a dollar limit on their value.
Step2
Check with your child to make sure she wants to give a gift. If your child doesn't, but you do, make it clear that the gift is from you.
Step3
If your child does want to give a gift, involve her in the selection process. Start by asking your child what the teacher might like.
Step4
Shop with the idea that the gift is a token of your child's appreciation for the teacher's efforts. Think small and inexpensive.
Step5
Better yet, encourage your child to make a gift. Even a first-grader can frame her picture with Popsicle sticks, and those are the types of gifts teachers treasure long after they've eaten the last box of chocolates.
Step6
Shopping at the last minute? Personalize that "World's Greatest Teacher" coffee mug with a handmade card from your youngster.
Tips & Warnings
Be sensitive to diversity issues. Unless your child attends a parochial school, avoid gifts associated with specific religious observances, such as Christmas tree ornaments or menorah candles.

I made a questionaire with ideas such as: favorite color, any animals if so what kind how big etc, birthday(they don't have to give the year),favorite drinks, foods, type of movies. Let the teacher fill it out and make copies for all the students to take home.

We always make a big batch of hot chocolate mix. We include the recipe and how to mix it. My kids then decorate the container or we put it in a useful plastic pitcher.

Most teachers have enough apple-themed gifts after 1-4 years of teaching experience. Consider stickers for grading papers, rubber stamps, note cards to send to parents, or treats like candy or seasonal goodies.
