Symptoms of hepatitis A infection are flulike and include fever, chills, nausea, jaundice (yellowed eyes and skin), dark urine, stomach pain and weakness. Most people take up to six months to recover, with few serious complications. Although there is no specific treatment for hepatitis A, you can take measures to prevent the disease from spreading.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Contact your doctor immediately if you show symptoms of hepatitis A. Diagnosis can be made via a blood test.

  2. Step 2

Rest for one to four weeks after diagnosis. You might be very ill for one month, with full recovery taking up to six months.

  3. Step 3

    Eat foods high in protein.

  4. Step 4

Arrange for immunoglobulin injections for your family and intimate contacts within 10 days of exposure. This injection can usually prevent hepatitis A or at least reduce symptoms.

  5. Step 5

Avoid attending work or sending infected children to day-care centers or schools for at least one week after jaundice appears.

  6. Step 6

Avoid making family meals or sharing eating utensils and towels while infected.

on 7/16/2008 Although they did in the past, doctors no longer suggest a diet high in protein. When a person with Hepatitis A eats more protein than their body can use, the excess (especially when in the form of meat) begins to decompose as it travels through the intestine. As the meat decomposes, the toxins released are then passed through the liver, giving it more work while it's trying to recover. Doctors now suggest a well balanced diet high in antioxidants and fiber.
