Macular degeneration, or vision loss, is the most common cause of blindness in Americans over the age of 50. Look for the following symptoms to see whether you or someone you know may suffer from this condition.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

Step1
Look at a normally straight object and see whether it appears bent or wavy.
Step2
Look for a dark, blank or blurry spot in the center of your vision.
Step3
Cover one eye and see whether what you're looking at changes color.

Tips & Warnings

  • The people with the highest risk of developing macular degeneration are people over the age of 65; people who smoke; people with blue, green or hazel eyes; people who have had frequent exposure to sunlight (especially without protective eyewear); and postmenopausal women.
  • If symptoms persist or if you have specific medical conditions or concerns, we recommend you contact a physician. This information is not intended as a substitute for professional medical advice or treatment.
