How to Detect Vision Loss

Macular degeneration, or vision loss, is the most common cause of blindness in Americans over the age of 50. Look for the following symptoms to see whether you or someone you know may suffer from this condition.

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

    Look at a normally straight object and see whether it appears bent or wavy.

  2. Step 2

    Look for a dark, blank or blurry spot in the center of your vision.

  3. Step 3

    Cover one eye and see whether what you're looking at changes color.

Tips & Warnings
  • The people with the highest risk of developing macular degeneration are people over the age of 65; people who smoke; people with blue, green or hazel eyes; people who have had frequent exposure to sunlight (especially without protective eyewear); and postmenopausal women.
