There are a variety of systems for measuring weight - metric weight, Avoirdupois weight, troy weight, apothecaries' weight. Only the first two are described below, as they are the most commonly used. Refer to the related sites for other systems.

Things You'll Need:

    Convert Measurements Within the U.S. (Avoirdupois) System

  1. Step 1

    About 27 grains equal 1 dram.

  2. Step 2

    Sixteen drams equal 1 ounce.

  3. Step 3

    Sixteen ounces equal 1 pound.

  4. Step 4

    One hundred pounds equal 1 short hundredweight.

  5. Step 5

    Twenty short hundredweight (or 2,000 pounds) equal 1 short ton.

  6. Convert Measurements Within the Metric System

  7. Step 1

    Ten milligrams equal 1 centigram.

  8. Step 2

    Ten centigrams equal 1 decigram.

  9. Step 3

    Ten decigrams (or 1,000 milligrams) equal 1 gram.

  10. Step 4

    Ten grams equal 1 decagram.

  11. Step 5

    Ten decagrams equal 1 hectogram.

  12. Step 6

    Ten hectograms (or 1,000 grams) equal 1 kilogram.

  13. Convert Measurements Between U.S. and Metric Systems

  14. Step 1

    One ounce equals about 28 grams (28.350 g). 1 gram equals 0.035 ounce.

  15. Step 2

    One pound equals 0.45 kilograms. 1 kilogram equals 2.2 pounds.

  16. Step 3

    One short ton equals 907 kilograms.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use approximations for easier conversions between grams and ounces, and kilograms and pounds.

on 8/10/2009 You can also try a great desktop conversion tool I found called Universal Converter. It has a free 30 day trial, and is very cheap to buy as well. I use it all the time!

on 2/20/2008 dchambers - You can use an online conversion tool to convert between ounces to cups or grams to ounces (you need to know what the fluid is to take the density into account though.) The unit conversion tool at easyunitconverter.com has a Volume Unit Conversion and a Kitchen Unit Conversion page dedicated to the units that I mostly use at kitchen.
