Region appears to dictate the name and contents of this cold, sweet drink. Known as a root beer float, a black cow, a brown cow, and a sassy cow, this all-American favorite is a snap to make. This recipe serves one.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

Step1
Chill a tumbler.
Step2
Add the vanilla ice cream and chocolate syrup.
Step3
Slowly pour in cold soda until the glass is full.
Step4
Garnish with whipped cream and a cherry.
Step5
Serve with a straw and long-handled spoon.

Tips & Warnings

  • This can also be made with Yoo-Hoo or any carbonated drink.
  • Try different flavors of ice cream for variation.
  • Frozen yogurt and diet sodas are healthy alternatives to ice cream and pop.
  • If you pour the root beer too fast, the glass may overflow. It's best to pour a little at a time and let the foam settle before adding more.

on 8/14/2006 To make what I call an orange cow, use orange soda and vanilla ice cream. This tastes remarkably like a Dreamsicle (orange sherbet and vanilla ice cream on a stick). Enjoy!

on 2/25/2006 At our house, when grandma asks if we want a brown cow, that means a Pepsi or Coke with ice cream, and a black cow is root beer with ice cream.

on 11/22/2005 A tip to making a Black Cow is to put the root beer in the glass first. Then gently drop the ice cream in and garnish to your liking. This prevents the root beer from foaming up too much and overflowing.
