  4. Step 4

Assume that you will walk 2 to 3 miles per hour.

  5. Step 5

Pick a goal on the map that fits the time frame of your hike.

  6. Step 6

Look on the map for hills and likely shady areas.

Pack enough water for everyone in your party.

  11. Step 11

Head off on your hike, bringing your map.

Tips & Warnings
  • Plan conservatively, but leave your options open. You can always extend your hike.
  • Wear good shoes, but not new ones. Break in your shoes before heading off on the trail.
  • If you are taking a long walk in the woods, tell someone where you're going and the approximate time you expect to return.

on 3/26/2006 Bring duct tape. Duct tape is awesome on blisters, and there are a variety of other camping/outdoors uses for it too. Patch hole in canoe, wrap a sprained ankle or wrist, patch a hole in a tent, tape your keys or cell phone securely, remove splinters. It's a hiking/camping must have!

on 11/22/2005 Along with the important water, sunscreen, hat and loose clothing, take along your life line: the cell phone. If you get in trouble, you can call for help. Also, a small first-aid kit and extra power bars for reserve.
