Shrimp is one of the most popular shellfish to use in cooking. You can use it in pastas, deep fry them, cook them or eat them raw. This is one of the healthier ways to prepare shrimp. Try it the next time you're craving prawn. This recipe serves 6-8 people.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Thaw the shrimp if they are frozen. The best way to thaw shrimp is to put them in a bowl of warm water, just make sure to change the water every now and then in the beginning because the first batch will cool down very quickly from the frozen shrimp.

  2. Step 2

Shell and devein shrimp. This is the time consuming part of preparing shrimp, but it has to be done. You can leave the shell of the tail on if you like.

  3. Step 3

Rinse the shrimp thoroughly until they are clean.

  4. Step 4

Add enough water into a pan to cover all shrimp when they are later placed in the pan.

  5. Step 5

Add salt, if desired, and turn the heat on to high and allow it to boil.

  6. Step 6

Place the shrimp in the pan and cover it with a lid.

  7. Step 7

Turn heat down and allow to simmer 3 to 5 minutes.

  8. Step 8

Check if the shrimps are ready by making sure they have turned opaque inside.

  9. Step 9

Transfer shrimp to cold water if you are going to eat them cold, otherwise add them to your pasta sauce or any other dish that calls for cooked shrimp.

Tips & Warnings
  • You can shell shrimp after cooking rather than before, if desired, but allow an extra minute or two of cooking time.
  • Be careful not to overcook shrimp, as their meat will become tough.
