Step 1
Look for European make up lines. Most European companies have made it a policy to no longer test products on animals. You may need to look a little deeper if you're also opposed to the use of any animal by-products in the creation of make up. Some lines may still use some animal by-products.
-
Step 2
Contact customer service to find out if the company tests their products on animals. Ask pointed questions and don't allow them the verbally dance around the question. If the company uses cruelty-free practices, then they'll be more than happy to let you know immediately and in a straight-forward manner. Be sure to ask if any animal by-products are used to make any of the products in the company's make up line.
-
Step 3
Take caution not be to manipulated by unethical companies who claim to be cruelty-free even if they're not. Some cosmetic companies out there are deceptive and claim to be cruelty-free because the company itself doesn't engage in those practices. However, they may purchase ingredients from suppliers that do animal testing or use animal products without asking any questions.

Step 4
Be aware that just because there's a bunny or a crossed out bunny on the make ups label doesn't necessarily mean that it's completely cruelty free. If you want complete assurance, then look for the leaping rabbit on packaging. This sign has been set up by the Coalition for Consumer Information on Cosmetics and provides full assurance that no animal testing was utilized in the creation of the make up and no animal ingredients were used.
