Step 1
Determine what you really need before you go to the store to buy. Salespeople will pitch you on all the wonderful features high end cameras have. Before you go into the store, have a pretty good idea of how you'll use the camera so you will know which features are not necessary.
-
Step 2
Think about what type of camera to buy. There are two basic types of camera: the point and shoot and the single-lens reflex. Point and shoot cameras are cheaper and for people who want to take simple pictures using automatic settings. Single-lens reflex cameras are more expensive and are for people who want to take advanced pictures using manual settings.
-
Step 3
Look for an optical zoom. Cameras advertise two different types of zooms: optical and digital. A digital zoom is accomplished by your camera simply cropping the picture. It's best to buy a digital camera with an optical zoom because optical zooms actually zoom in on subjects with the lens.
-
Step 4
Keep in mind extra costs. The price of the camera may not be your only expense. Check out the price of batteries and memory for your camera. Also determine whether you'll want a camera bag, a tripod or any specialty lenses when setting your budget.
-
Step 5
Check out reviews. When you get a basic idea of what type of camera you might want, start narrowing down your options to a few models. Then check out reviews. You can find digital camera reviews on the DP Review website as well as Steve's DigiCams (see Resources).
-
Step 6
Try before you buy. Once you have found a few specific digital camera models you like, go to the store and ask to try them out. Then, go home and think about your options before you buy. When you reach a definite conclusion, go back to buy the digital camera.
