1
Speak to organizations like Free the Children and Leaders Today (see Resources) to find out how organizers and volunteers got started building schools for those less fortunate. Join a building team and find out where the need is. Then choose the country you want to help.
-
2
Talk to others who have already been part of the project. Ask how long it takes to build, how hard the work really is and what you need to get started. Talk to a lawyer and find out about any laws you should know about building in a foreign country and about the danger of working in a developing country.

3
Find out what materials you need, what labor you will require and how you will get these materials to your location. Put together a team of students, volunteers and local citizens to help with the building.
-
4
Determine the cost of building a school including building materials, transportation, visas, flights and labor. An average school with one room in a developing country costs about $6500.
-
5
Start building your school from the ground up. Clear the ground by hand and then dig a trench in the ground using hand tools so that you have a place to lay the foundation.
-
6
Build the foundation. Once the foundation is set, use a team of builders to erect the building. Build the structure and raise it by hand.
