How to Build a Jump

Making a normal old jump is easy but building a motorcycle jump for clearing cars, buses or canyons takes real skill. Knowing the dangers and finding the perfect spot are just a few of the pieces you have to consider before construction begins. Jumping long distances on a motorcycle is serious business.

Instructions

Difficulty: Challenging
Step1
Find an area protected from wind, has plenty of starting and stopping room and is level. Check the ground to ensure there is nothing that could cause the tire to slip or washout on either end. Consider the ability to bring in cars or other obstacles you jump over.
Step2
Determine the exact distance between ramps. Factor in the weight of the bike and rider, distance and speed required to get the motorcycle over the cars and onto the landing ramp.
Step3
Build the ramp using lumber and plywood. Maintain the correct angle by measuring throughout the build process. Check every piece of wood for defects such as cracks or warping and replace any problem lumber when found. Inspect each piece after installation as well.
Step4
Move the cars or buses into position and check the weather conditions. Go over all safety factors and verify every member of the team understands and performs their job. Walk through the procedure including what to do in the event of an accident.
Step5
Clear the run-up and landing areas of any debris, verify the wind conditions are within accepted levels and begin the jump countdown. Hold your breath and pray because the jump is now out of your hands.
