Taking a full inventory of your home is time consuming, but worth it. It's important to compile a complete inventory of your belongings every now and then so you know what you own. Having a current home inventory is extremely helpful in the event of a fire or theft.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Buy a ledger book and have a pen ready. Plan to spend an entire Saturday or full weekend to conduct your home inventory. Save time by getting your entire family involved, if you so choose.

  2. Step 2

Create a section of your ledger book for each room of the house. Organize your inventory by room, so you know where you keep everything. This will also help if you ever wonder you put something, like that photo album of your great-grandparents.

  3. Step 3

Start at one end of one room and work your way around the room. Write down each item you see. Be as detailed as you like. Write down titles of books and be descriptive.

  4. Step 4

Write down any serial numbers in the column next to each item that has a serial number. This will include most of your electronics, furniture and general home appliances.

  5. Step 5

Move on to the next room and so on until you've finished the inventory. You now have a complete inventory of your entire house. Store this inventory book in a secured location away from your home like a safety deposit box. Make copies of your inventory book or scan it into a computer, so you have multiple copies of your hard work.

Tips & Warnings
  • Another option is to enter your home inventory into a spreadsheet or software program.
