How to Create Good Study Habits for Exams

The key to good study skills lies in your ability to get organized and stay that way. You can spend a lot of time and energy trying to find the perfect study spot but if you aren't organized, it doesn't matter where you study because you won't get much done. Good organization leads to good study habits.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose your study time and stick to it to develop strong study skills. You want to choose the time of day when you feel most alert, not when your brain is likely to be fuzzy and tired. Then be consistent, studying at this time every day.

    • 2

Write down your schedule where you can access it easily. Choose a schedule that allows you to see at least a week in advance, but have a full calendar schedule available. Some projects stretch over months so to have good study skills you sometimes need to write down a long-term schedule.

    • 3

Consider going digital with your schedule. You must have a scheduling system that's flexible because things in your schedule are likely to change. A digital planner allows you to make changes quickly and simply.

    • 4

Organize a study pack so you can just grab it and go without wasting time looking for materials. A study pack must include items like writing instruments, paper, highlighters and anything else you regularly use. You can use anything from a tote bag to a fancy office organizer for your study pack, just so long as it keeps your materials together in one easily accessible, portable place.

Tips & Warnings

  • Make sure you eat properly before you attempt to study. One of the side effects of low blood sugar is the inability to focus, which makes it impossible to study well.

  • If studying stresses you out, periodically take a few minutes to do a mini meditation. Sit up straight with your feet flat on the floor. Take 10 slow deep breaths. As you breathe, focus only on your breathing. For more details on how to meditate, see Resources for an article on this method.
