How to Configure a Router to use DHCP

DHCP is a function of a computer or router that assigns an IP address to connected computers. Each computer is assigned a unique address similar to houses on a street. When information is needed from or is sent to a computer that resides on a network, the IP address is used to differentiate the different computers. Find out how to set your router to be a DHCP for your system.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Router
  • Manual and setup information about router security options.

Step1
Open your Internet browser. Log into the router. Each router has a factory default IP address assigned to it. It also has a login name and password associated with it. These are both listed in the manual that came with your router and if you have lost it, you can find this information at the company website of the manufacturer.
Step2
Look for the DHCP assignment on the first page of the router. This is the usual placement of the switch that will enable or disable the DHCP ability of the router. Click the radio button that enables the router to serve as the system DHCP.
Step3
Check the DHCP server settings on the page. The range of IP addresses that will be assigned to client computers is listed, as is the maximum number of users that can be handled. As would be expected, some manufacturers configure their control software a bit differently and you may have to hunt through the software to find where the switch is to turn DHCP on.
