Get some exercise in your own town by cycling from place to place. You can get fit and save on gas at the same time. See the beauty of your town as you travel through the streets and parks. Use these tips to cycle in your town or city.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Step1
Choose a bike that is the right size for you. Sit on your bike and make sure you can touch the ground with both feet. Wear a helmet and make sure your brakes work properly so that you can stop quickly and safely.
Step2
Find bike routes or trails in your area. You can cycle on the side of the road if you obey regular traffic rules and drive safely. Some towns and cities have bike paths built along the sides of the main roads so cyclists can bike safely next to the regular traffic.
Step3
Check your local community centers and chamber of commerce for bike trails and cycling information centers. Join a cycling club to get tips and local information about biking.
Step4
Prepare for longer cycling trips by taking water bottles. Take a tour around the outskirts of your town or travel right across from one side of the city to the next. Dress in layers in case the weather changes throughout your trip.
Step5
Follow the traffic rules in your area and learn the bike signals. Hold your left hand up to signal that you are turning right. Point your left hand straight out to the side to signal that you are turning left. Point your left hand straight down to signal that you are stopping.
Step6
Try mountain biking. You can drive safely away from traffic and enjoy the scenery of the countryside and parklands. You need a mountain bike for this type of cycling. Visit a local cycle shop for all the equipment you need.

Tips & Warnings

  • Dress properly for comfort, safety and the weather.
  • Some cycling signals are different outside of the United States and Canada.
