Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Step1
Decide if the change you want to make is realistic. You can become a much different person, even a much better person than you are, but you are limited to what can be achieved starting from where you are now.
Step2
Allow for less than perfection. Even the most honest people can't tell the truth all the time and the most dedicated athletes sometimes miss a training session. Allow for imperfection in the person you want to become and in yourself as you become that person.
Step3
Break a big change into many little changes. Think about the person you want to become and make a list of traits you want to acquire. Make a list of those traits, prioritized according to which you need to acquire first. For instance, if you want to get a college education but are often lazy, you first have to work on your laziness.
Step4
Work on one trait at a time. When that trait has become enough of a habit that you don't have to think about it, you can move on to the next one on your list.
Step5
Expect resistance and disapproval. Your family and friends don't know the person you want to be; they only know the person they already know, a person like themselves in many ways. By wanting to change who you are, you are taking away the person they know and replacing that person with one that they don't know. They will naturally not want this to happen.
