How to Give a Horse a Registered Name

Horses that are purebreds, meaning they're usually bred for racing or showing, are required to have a registered name. This ensures that both the owner and animal are protected from unscrupulous breeders who trade on a famous name. The first step is to decide on a name and the association you'd like to join.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy
Step1
Choose a career path for your horse. A horse you plan to breed belongs in a breeding society, while a racing horse should be registered with a racing society.
Step2
Pick a formal name for your horse that will appear on the official papers and during races and shows. The formal name is different from the name you call the horse at other times. For example his name might be Prince William while you and your kids call him Sparky.
Step3
Fill out the membership forms provided by the association, making sure to answer all the questions carefully. The forms should come with detailed instructions on how to complete the process of registering a horse.
Step4
Read through the instructions to see if you need to include information from the breeder or veterinarian or if you need to take any photographs of the horse. Some associations require records from the veterinarian or pictures before they'll process the forms.
Step5
Make copies of all the records and forms for your personal records. If your package gets lost in the mail or the association can't process it for any reason, you'll have all the information on hand.
Step6
Write out a check for the registration fees and place all your completed forms in the mail and send it back to the association. Once they receive the information you can begin using the registered name with your horse.
