Instructions

    • 1

Begin by realizing that change is a part of everybody's life and that you are no exception. Sometimes when negative change happens to us, there can be a sense of persecution as though we alone are going through something terrible. This is not the case; everyone in the world is dealing with change of different magnitudes on a daily basis.

    • 2

Understand that change is essential to individual development. Whether it is going away to college, getting married, having a baby or coping with the death of a parent, change allows us to become stronger individuals. If we learn from change, we grow from change.

    • 3

Take a few minutes to reflect on why the change is happening. Sometimes we initiative change ourselves, but sometimes it just happens to us and we are left wondering the inevitable "why?" Sometimes we can't see the positive of change in the moment and it takes time to see the positive benefits of what at first appears as negative change.

    • 4

Write down what has happened and how it makes you feel. Sometimes writing out confusing feelings can help you gain a little perspective. It can also make change you have had trouble accepting finally appear real.

    • 5

Spend time alone in the great outdoors. When life's changes feel overwhelming, sometimes the quickest way to gain perspective is to step out of the situation and catch your proverbial breathe. Walking alone through the natural beauty of nature can make things seem just a little more manageable.

    • 6

Converse with friends and family on recent changes in their lives and ask how they coped. Talking to others who have been through a similar life changing event can provide much needed advice. It also makes you feel a lot less isolated; it is important to verbalize feelings when they start to overwhelm.

    • 7

Accept and embrace the change to its fullest. When we can't bend life to suit our will, we have to bend ourselves to suit our lives.
