How to Have a Homemade Christmas Tree and Save Money

Save

If you're tired of dragging that huge Christmas tree up from the basement, dusting off the hundreds of ornaments and spending an entire day setting it up, then resolve to make this Christmas easier. A homemade Christmas tree is a fun and easy activity to do with children or grandchildren. Make several of them to place around the house to add a festive atmosphere.

Things You'll Need

  • Green poster board
  • Yellow poster board
  • Scissors
  • Glue or glue stick
  • Construction paper
  • Hole-punch
  • Markers
  • Trace an outline of a Christmas tree on the poster board and cut it out using scissors. The size of the tree can be large or small, depending on your preference. Place the cut-out tree on the poster board and trace it, creating an identical tree. Cut the second tree out with scissors.

  • Mark the center of the tree by drawing a vertical line down the center of the tree and place a mark in the middle of the line. Repeat on the second tree.

  • Cut along the line on the first tree, starting at the tip and stopping when you get to the mark indicating the middle of the tree.

  • Start at the bottom or widest part of the second tree and cut along the center line up towards the middle mark, again stopping just as you reach the middle.

  • Slide the two trees together using the slits so the trees create an X and they meet in the middle. The trees should somewhat mirror each other on all sided and the bottom should be level, with both tree bottoms touching the surface upon which it sits.

  • Make a star shape from the yellow piece of poster board and cut a slit in the bottom of the star, between the two downward points. Stop when you reach the middle of the star. Slip the star onto one of the tree tops using the slit.

  • Decorate the paper Christmas tree by gluing different decorations cut from construction paper onto the tree. Use a hole-punch to create bulbs and markers to make streamers or other decorations.
