Bikram yoga, or hot yoga, is a unique yoga style which incorporates a set of specific poses which are performed in a room heated to 105 degrees F. Thought to help release toxins from the body while freeing the mind, Bikram yoga is a great way to get your body into shape; however, there are a few things to consider before you get started.

From Quick Guide: Bikram Yoga and You
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Bottled water
  • Layered clothing
  • Towel
  1. Step 1

Prepare to perform yoga in high temperatures for about 90 minutes. Because of the physical work and the heat, you will sweat a lot, so make sure that you drink plenty of water and bring a bottle of water with you to practice. Additionally, it is best to practice Bikram yoga on an empty stomach to prevent aches, pains and cramping.

  2. Step 2

Wear layered clothing to class so that you can help to control your body temperature. As you start warming up in the hot yoga class, you can remove your outer layers, putting them back on as you begin to cool off.

  3. Step 3

Keep a towel close by as you practice Bikram yoga. Because of the heat and sweating, your mat can become a very slippery surface. A clean towel can be used to wipe your forehead and hands as well as your mat when needed.

  4. Step 4

Take the time to cool down after your yoga session. When the class enters into corpse pose, resist the urge to get up and start your day. This time is meant to help your body adjust to the changes made, bring down your body temperature and prepare you mentally for the day.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you begin to feel hot and uncomfortable, sit or lie down on your mat, but do not leave the room. Moving quickly from the heated room after working physically to a cool room can shock your system.
  • There is no yoga practice which asks you to push yourself to the extremes; however, being aware of your own limitations is even more important in Bikram yoga, as the heat is already challenge enough.
  • Hot yoga poses can cause you to feel lightheaded or even nauseous, particularly when starting out, as your body will quickly detox. Make sure that you are well hydrated, start slowly and speak to your instructor if you have any doubts or questions.
