Installing a radiant heating system in your home can increase the comfort underfoot. A radiant floor heating system can be installed under wood flooring or ceramic tile. Be sure to send your floor plan to the company when you order your radiant floor heating system. The company should give you a list of materials you will need to install your radiant floor heating system.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Cut the mesh backing that is around the heating cables with a pair of scissors before you install your radiant floor heating system. This will allow you to make panels to fit around corners, cabinets or fixtures. Just be sure you don't cut the cables.

  2. Step 2

Test the cables on your radiant floor heating system with the tester that comes with your radiant heating system to make sure it is working. If you're installing ceramic tile, place a 1/8-inch layer of thinset over the mesh.

  3. Step 3

Hire a licensed electrician to wire the thermostat in a standard wall box.

  4. Step 4

Test the system to make sure it works and enjoy warming your home from the bottom up.

Tips & Warnings
  • Staple or glue the mesh to the subfloor, but be sure not to staple the cables.
  • Follow the manufacturer's instructions that come with your radiant floor heating system.
  • Install separate zones for each room so you can regulate the heat to suit your comfort level.
  • Don't place tubing where walls will go if you're installing your radiant floor heating system in a new construction. It is a waste of materials and energy to heat the floor underneath a wall.
