Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step1
Go on a geocache to get an idea of what others do to create a hunt. Pay attention to the types of containers and treasures they use, as well as the location of the hidden geocache.
Step2
Get treasures to hide in the geocache container that are inexpensive such as a deck of cards or small toys from a dollar store. While snacks seem like a good treasure idea for hungry geocachers, they can spoil and may attract wild animals.
Step3
Provide a notebook and pen inside the container along with a note welcoming the geocacher. Also, include an explanation letter in case a non-geocacher happens upon the treasure to let them know the container is part of a geocache.
Step4
Find a container that is waterproof and put the treasures in a resealable plastic bag inside. Mark the container to indicate it is a geocache item.
Step5
Pick a hidden location that takes some time to reach during a hike, but is still accessible. Make sure to hide the geocache on public land.
Step6
Choose an interesting location, which rewards the geocacher, such as a scenic spot. If it is a historical or other such site, respect the location and protect the environment.
Step7
Make sure the container is secure from the elements. Maintain the cache over time by assuring it is still accessible, the inventory is intact and the container is still waterproof.
