How to Have a Personal Christian Devotion

Being committed to taking time each day for personal devotion is an important part of the spiritual growth of a Christian. God desires for Christians to spend time in the study of God's word, in prayer and in worship to God. Making this a habit will draw you closer to God and keep you on the Christian path.

Instructions

1. Determine when you will have your devotional time and treat that time as sacred. Many people find the best time for them is first thing in the morning. Life has less of a tendency to intrude that way and you start your day off with a good mindset.

2. Select a place for your devotion that will be quiet and relaxing with little chance for distraction.

3. Decide how you want to organize your devotional time. You want to have time for Bible reading, prayer and worship. Some also take the opportunity to memorize Scripture verses.

4. Let your family know when and where you'll be having your daily devotional, and ask that they not interrupt you.

5. Set reasonable goals for yourself, especially if you're new to having a daily devotional time. Start by committing just ten minutes of time and a short passage of Scripture, and you'll probably find yourself wanting to spend more time in personal Christian devotion as it becomes a habit.

6. Remember that there is no right or wrong way to have Christian devotions. Let yourself be led by God during your devotion time and try not to allow yourself to feel rushed.
