Those who struggle with addiction often fail to see the personal responsibility and thus the personal power in fighting the addiction. Twelve Step programs endeavor to urge people to accept the responsibility, cultivate personal power and have the faith and strength to kick the addiction. There are a number of established groups for a variety of addictions, the same 12 Steps are the foundation of each.

Instructions

Difficulty: Challenging
Step1
Undertake a 12-Step program freely and out of desire to change. Locate a meeting and attend. Ask a spouse, loved one or friend to attend a first meeting, if you need additional support.
Step2
Attend at least six meetings before drawing any conclusions about the group. Go to the same meeting each time or attend a variety of meetings in various locations. Sit quietly and listen without feeling any pressure to speak or participate.
Step3
Find a same-gender sponsor. Listen to the dialogue at the meetings and choose a potential sponsor who "lives in the solution," "walks the talk," emphasizes the steps, has a sponsor, has worked the steps and has substantial time in the program.
Step4
Seek guidance from the program director before selecting or approaching someone about being a sponsor. The person may decline due to work or travel schedules, the sponsorship of others or personal reasons. Be gracious and pursue another sponsor.
Step5
Work the 12 Steps with the sponsor. Be truthful, honest and cultivate a relationship of trust and confidence. Rely on the sponsor for strength and courage during difficult times while developing self-encouragement skills.
Step6
Regard the 12 Steps as a "path of self-discovery and personal growth." Use the Steps to develop and grow in spite of the addiction, which impedes growth.
Step7
Use worksheets, journaling or a workbook to provide additional insight and to strengthen resolve and understanding. (See Resources for free downloads)
