How to fit a Riding Helmet Correctly

In order for a riding helmet to keep you safe during your ride, it needs to fit properly. A properly fitted helmet is snug but comfortable. It should also be level when seated on your head, with the straps snug beneath your chin.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Measure the circumference of your head just above your ears. This is the main measurement you'll use to purchase a riding helmet that fits you properly.

  2. Step 2

Determine the general size of helmet you should begin with. Helmets are sold in small, medium and large, with each category further divided into traditional fits.

  3. Step 3

Try on a helmet in your size category. Use the straps to secure the helmet as if you were going riding. Move the helmet forward and backward and then side to side. If the helmet moves and your scalp and eyebrows don't, the helmet is too big.

  4. Step 4

Inspect the visor of your riding helmet. It should be about 1/2 inch above your eyebrows, and it should stay in place when you move your head around. Consider shallow or deeper contours to find the perfectly-sized riding helmet for your head.

  5. Step 5

Eliminate helmets that are too big, then begin to customize the fit. Place each riding helmet on your head and secure the straps. Then, evaluate the comfort of the helmet. It needs to be snug and comfortable.
