Guy Fawkes was an English revolutionary who tried to overthrow the government by blowing up Parliament. The plotters elected Guy Fawkes to trigger the gunpowder stored beneath Parliament. Guy Fawkes Day is celebrated in England each year on November 5th with parades and concludes with the burning of Guy Fawkes in effigy. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Construct an effigy of Guy Fawkes. Fawkes wore a cloak and hat and had a mustache and beard. Find a picture of Fawkes online and copy the face. The effigy should be constructed of inflammable materials. The effigy is called appropriately "the Guy."

    • 2

Obtain permission for a bonfire, parade and fireworks display if you plan to celebrate Guy Fawkes Day with a public celebration. Bonfires should be lit in an open area away from buildings and trees.

    • 3

Light the bonfire at sundown. The bonfire can also be used for cookouts with music and other festivities.

    • 4

Parade around with the Guy. Children often take the effigy through the streets and ask for a few pennies for the Guy to buy fireworks.

    • 5

Burn the Guy in effigy by setting it on fire directly or throwing it onto the bonfire. Guy Fawkes Day and Bonfire Night are a good time for an autumn celebration.
