How to Care for Discs

It can be hard to keep track of all the ubiquitous discs you use for movies, music, pictures and data. There is temptation to just throw them somewhere where they will be out of the way. However, when these discs hold important information or are expensive to replace, it's important to take proper care of them. Several tips will keep your discs safe.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Step1
Care for discs by storing them in moderate temperatures. Temperatures below freezing or above 100 degrees Fahrenheit can put the data on disks at risk.
Step2
Store disks properly when they are not in use. Disks must be stored in a disk case or in individual jewel cases when they are not being used to protect them from scratches.
Step3
Keep disks away from magnets at all times. If discs come into contact with magnets, the data on them can be lost.
Step4
Handle disks properly. When putting disks in and taking them out of devices, handle them by the edge and by the plastic ring in the middle. Touching the back of the disks can harm the disk.
Step5
Clean disks with window cleaner and water. Although cleaning disks does not need to be part of regular disk care, if the disk does get something on it, spray some window cleaner on it, wipe with a gentle cloth and then use a water-dampened cloth to remove the window cleaner. Dry with a dry cloth.
Step6
Back up disks with important information on them. Even with excellent care, disks won't last for ever. Always keep a backup copy of disks and make a new backup copy every five years.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you must put a disc down, place it label side down.
  • Avoid writing on discs with anything other than a gentle-tipped permanent marker.
  • Avoid placing discs in direct sunlight for more than a few minutes.
