How to Block Potential Threats With a Firewall Program

If you access the Internet without the protection of a firewall, hackers can gain access to your computer and cause considerable damage, like destroying files and stealing your personal information. To protect your personal computer or business network, you need a solid firewall program to block potential threats.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Step1
Obtain a solid firewall program. Paid versions offer additional protection, although the free versions offer adequate basic security. One effective program is ZoneAlarm. You'll notice a pop-up window whenever someone tries to access your computer; this applies to traffic coming in and going out. You can block applications that may seem questionable.
Step2
Consider NetVeda Safety.Net. This program works similarly to ZoneAlarm. You can allow access to those applications that you need and guard those that look suspicious. Parental controls are also available with this program.
Step3
Download Comodo Firewall Pro. This program provides security alerts and suggests actions to take.
Step4
Block programs temporarily if you're not sure what they are. Look up the program on the Internet for the next time it comes up. If it's a dangerous threat, block the threat permanently. This way, you won't receive any alerts involving that particular threat, as the program will automatically block it on subsequent occasions.
Step5
Read the tutorial for the program you choose, so you can learn to use the program effectively. Firewall programs are effective, but you'll need to train them at first. You'll need to allow and deny access to various programs and applications; if you allow access to a potential threat, you'll continue to have problems.
