Decide what color and material will best coordinate with your outfit and hold your hair back effectively. Although silk or chiffon scarves provide a luxurious sheen, for example, they may also slip off your head more often than cotton or lace. If you want the look anyway, consider holding a slippery scarf in place with bobby pins.

2
Look for reversible scarves to give you more looks for your money. Some may have a pattern and a solid color, while others may feature two different materials like denim and fleece. (See Resources below.)

3
Stay comfortable on a hot day or while you're exercising with a microfiber scarf. The absorbent material can pull moisture away from your head and neck to keep you cool.
-
4
Cover a larger area with a turban-style head scarf. Look for a version with loops that allow you to string a thin scarf, ribbon or even a necklace through to coordinate with your outfit.
-
5
Consider longer versions that you can knot at the top of your head or tie in back. Find scarves with a variety of patterns, colors and accents like beaded or fringed trim (see Resources below).

Tips & Warnings
Turn a scarf into a headband by folding it in half the long way until you've got the desired width. If you have long hair, put it into a ponytail to make tying the scarf easier. Position the scarf about an inch behind your hairline, wrap it down behind your neck and tie it in back. Let the ends hang down decoratively or tie them into knots and let your hair down to cover them.
