Step 1
Start with an organic mattress for the crib. Keep in mind that many mattresses use chemical fire retardants, even when they use natural materials. Instead, look for mattresses that use wool which resists fire and dust mites without chemicals.
-
Step 2
Look for baby bedding that is 100 percent free of chemicals and toxins. The bedding must be certified as organic, but be careful, as some items look like they are certified when they are not. If you have questions about a product, call the company and ask specifically about how it's made. For example, 100 percent latex may not be 100 percent natural latex.

Step 3
Go beyond organic cotton. Although organic cotton products are the most frequently found, you can also find bedding made from other natural materials such as bamboo. Choose natural materials that are sustainable as well as organic for less impact on the earth.
-
Step 4
Use organic wool mattress pads. Wool helps resist moisture, dust mites and bacteria. It also doesn't need frequent washing, which can be a blessing for busy parents. You can purchase both fitted organic wool mattress pads and smaller pads for changing tables.

Step 5
Share your plans to use organic bedding with friends and family so that gift items will follow your needs.
