How to Troubleshoot Gmail Chat
Gmail chat is available with Google's email service. It allows you to send instant messages within the email feature, and friends can reply right away if they're online. Gmail chat eliminates the delay between sending and replying that is usually associated with regular email. However, slow computer connections or problems with the web page can cause Gmail chat to stop working.

1
Verify your computer's ISP settings if Gmail chat gets disabled. Configure any software such as anti-virus or firewall programs so you can access chat. Delete the web browser's cache or cookies, since the information stored from these sources may interfere with chat.
-
2
Check your web browser if you can't open chat. Gmail chat only works with Internet Explorer 6 and up, or Firefox 1 and higher. Make sure that the chat interface is set to standard rather than HTML, and the language is also set correctly.

3
Clear the browser cache, or fix any security software on your computer if you have trouble sending chat messages. If the "Send" button doesn't work after you've composed a message, there may be conflicts between chat and the security software on your computer. Report the problem to Gmail technical support if clearing the cache doesn't help.
-
4
Refresh the web browser if chat freezes. Gmail chat may freeze if you leave it open and inactive for more than 10 minutes. Log in again to restart your chat session.
-
5
Use the Gmail secure site if chat has technical difficulties. Problems with the website may prevent you from sending and receiving chat messages. The secure site also offers extra security in this case.
