How to Cut Batt Insulation
Batt insulation is the fluffy pink or yellow stuff that's typically found peeking through the studs of an attic wall. It can be tricky to work with, especially when you need to cut it down to an exact size. If you know how to cut it, you can avoid wasting materials, mounting frustration and slicing fingers. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Measure the space where you'll be placing the insulation. Write down your measurements. It might be tempting to rely on your memory, but it's better to have it in writing than be sorry if your insulation doesn't fit. Double check your measurements.

2
Spread out your insulation on a smooth cutting surface. Some people find it easier to cut batt insulation if the insulation side is facing up rather than the paper side, but it's a matter of preference. If you're using the floor, make sure you don't mind if it gets marked up by your knife. A smooth, wide piece of lumber placed on the floor makes an excellent cutting surface, and as a bonus, you can use it as scratch paper for your measurements.

3
Mark the insulation with the length and width you need to cut, adding a little bit of space. This bit of space provides you with some wiggle room if your measurements are slightly off or your cut isn't exactly straight. It's far better to cut your insulation too wide than too narrow.

4
Press your carpenter's square into the insulation along the line you'll be cutting. Consider using your knee to add weight to the carpenter's square if you're cutting on the floor. You want the insulation to be as compressed as you can get it so it's easier to cut.

5
Cut the insulation using short strokes. Move the carpenter's square as you cut along the length of the insulation.
