How to Install Roof Fascia

The final additions to the trim and roof are the installation of fascia and soffit. The fascia may be made of vinyl or wood. Using wood is a bit more challenging and is also a bit more prone to rot if moisture gets behind it and attacks the rafter ends. Installation requires a period of dry hot days to dry the wood before placement. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Measure for your fascia. Make a list of the exact sizes of boards that you will need to serve as your fascia. Cutting the boards ahead of time will save time in placement and will allow the wood to dry well before placed on the house. Place the fascia on the house only after a few days of very hot, dry days.

    • 2

Paint the fascia before installation so that all the surfaces of the fascia are painted. Paint them before hanging so that the ends where the cuts will be made also get painted.

    • 3

Start putting up the fascia from one corner of the house. Work your way around the house and back to the starting point. Lay out the pieces of fascia as you measured them previously to ease the installation. Hold the fascia to the edge of the roofline where the rafters end.

    • 4

Nail the fascia to the rafter ends at the top and bottom edge of the piece of fascia. The fascia will seal the house from water coming down the roof and dripping into the gutters. Between the soffit and fascia, the eaves of the house are sealed.

Make sure that the fascia boards seal tightly at seams and corners. These are the hardest areas to seal well. Caulk the ends if there is any concern about being watertight. Work around the house in a logical progression until you reach the point where you began.
