Instructions

    • 1

Measure the height of the gable end framing from the floor of the attic to the peak of the gable. The ends of the brace should be the same distance from the gable as the gable is high (a 10-foot gable requires a brace nailed 10 feet back from the gable end).

    • 2

Determine length of boards needed for the brace. Measure the height of gable end from the top of the gable along the roof peak and mark with a pencil. Then measure from that point to the bottom of the gable end.

    • 3

Cut two 2-inch by 4-inch or 2-inch by 6-inch boards to the lengths measured. Place the end of one board at the top of the gable end and the opposite side at the bottom of the fourth truss.

    • 4

Toenail board to top of gable framing and nail bottom to the fourth truss. Place the second board with one end at the bottom of the gable end and the opposite end at the top of the fourth truss.

    • 5

Nail each end of the second board into place. The brace should form an "X." Repeat these steps on the opposite gable end to add support to both ends of the roof.

    • 6

Strengthen framing around gable ends by doubling ceiling joists and rafters around the gable. Cut boards on a diagonal, then join the two pieces and nail or screw them together where the diagonal overlaps.

Tips & Warnings

  • Wear safety goggles or glasses when cutting wood.

  • Check with your town to find out if a permit is needed to add a brace to your gable end roof framing, and if an inspection of this brace is required upon completion.
