Using the attic for storage is great unless you're stuck with tiny drop down stairs for access. Installing an attic lift makes using the attic space feasible, safe and easy. Attic lifts lower into the garage where they can be loaded and then raised into the attic. Installing an attic lift makes use of existing space and is easy to operate.

Difficulty: Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Verify you have a 110 VAC available for power in the attic and measure the distance between the garage floor and the ceiling to ensure you order the correct lift. Check the height of the joists; if they are more than 16 inches you'll need to order a custom frame from the manufacturer.

  2. Step 2

Locate an area above the garage with at least 48 inches of clearance above the attic floor. Cut a hole in the attic floor at least 24 inches by 48 inches to prepare for building the frame.

  3. Step 3

Create a 22 ½ inch by 46 ½ inch frame with 2 inch by 4 inch lumber inside the hole. Ensure the inside edge is smooth and free of protruding nails or other objects to allow unhindered operation of the lift.

  4. Step 4

Install the lift head over the opening by connecting it to the provided housing legs. Center the assembly over the attic opening and bolt the legs to the floor. Drop the lift cables through the opening and down to the garage floor.

  5. Step 5

Connect the lift panel, legs and support following the provided directions. Continue by connecting the lift cables to the lift panel and visually verify the cables and opening are clear.

  6. Step 6

Test the lift to ensure proper operation and that the ceiling plate creates a good seal when in the upright position. You are now ready to load boxes and other items you wish to store.
