Getting and staying organized is one of life's ongoing challenges. Using your garage for storage can help you get organized, get rid of clutter and still allow you to access things you need. The trick is to find enough storage space in your garage.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Clean your garage thoroughly before you rearrange things for storage. Take this opportunity to get rid of as much stuff as you can. You can give it charity, give it away, sell it in a yard sale or recycle it.

  2. Step 2

Make a list of all the things you want to store. Then decide on what the best method is to store them. To enclose items, use cabinets and bins with covers. Store open items on shelves, hooks, racks or in bins.

  3. Step 3

Design a garage storage plan before you start moving things around. You can do it on your computer or draw a simple diagram on paper.

  4. Step 4

Label your garage storage areas clearly to keep them organized and use them properly.

Tips & Warnings
  • Save money by refurbishing used cabinets instead of buying new ones.
  • If you need help, check with the National Association of Professional Organizers to find a professional organizer in your area (see Resources below).
  • Be careful to store dangerous materials away from where your children can reach.
  • Take a moment to consider any regional issues you may have. For example, if you live in an earthquake zone, storing sharp items overhead is inadvisable. Likewise, in areas with extreme heat or cold, you'll be unable to store some things in the garage without damaging them.
