Eye makeup is an indispensable tool in most women's beauty arsenal. Eye liner, mascara and eye shadow come in just about every color of the rainbow to suit every skin tone and complexion. It's important to use eye makeup safety tips when applying eye makeup to keep eyes healthy and beautiful.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Keep eye makeup in a cool, dry place. If you store makeup away from extreme temperatures or excess moisture it will help retain the integrity and pigments of the makeup. Store eye makeup in closed containers to keep bacteria and germs out of the mix.

  2. Step 2

Replace eye makeup applicators every 6 months. Use single-use applicators like sponges and cotton swabs one time only and then discard them. Replace wands and brushes after you've used them for 6 months. Dirt and bacteria build up on these tools with daily use and could be harmful to your eyes, so swap them out for new ones regularly.

  3. Step 3

Use your own makeup. Never share eye makeup or makeup applicators with others. Using someone's makeup can cause cross contamination and transmit germs and bacteria, which can result in painful eye infections.

  4. Step 4

Buy new eye makeup regularly. Replace your eye makeup at least once a year, if not every 6 months. Bacteria and dirt accumulate in eye makeup no matter how carefully you store it, so it's best to change it up regularly. Replace your eye makeup in the spring and fall so you can stock up on the hot new colors for the seasons.

  5. Step 5

Remove eye makeup before bed. Sleeping in your eye makeup allows dirt, bacteria and oil to accumulate in your eye. It can clog the pores of your eyelids, causing inflammation or infection. Use a gentle eye makeup remover and cleanser every night and wash your eyes and face thoroughly.

Tips & Warnings
  • Avoid future eye infections. If you have an eye infection, replace all your eye makeup and applicators immediately. There could be bacteria in them that caused the infection, so play it safe by buying new makeup and getting rid of the potentially dangerous stuff.
