Things You'll Need:
- 1-by-4 pieces of lumber to fit size of project
- Circular or hand saw
- Roofing nails or pressure nail strips
- Hammer or pressure nailer
- Tile clips
-
Step 1
Bring enough 1-by-4-inch "battens" to the construction site to cover the roof. By the time you get to the battens you'll already have all your measurements.
-
Step 2
Carry the battens to the roof. Take care not to damage the fascia or guttering after the sarking (the moisture barrier underlayment) is laid and punched down over the set out nails. The set out nails were installed earlier, after the rafters were measured in relation to the size and width of the concrete tile.
-
Step 3
Lay the battens on top of the set out nails. The set out nails keep the battens from sliding off the roof. The majority of the roof likely requires the battens to be laid parallel to the roof line. Multi-pitch roofs require installation of the battens along the tile line.
-
Step 4
Trim the battens at all roof hips and valleys.
-
Step 5
Nail the battens to the rafters, either with a hammer or with a high pressure nailer, which is easier to work with on steep roof pitches.
-
Step 6
Raise the tiles to the roof and distribute them in even stacks across the roof. Rest the stacks of tiles above the battens to keep them from sliding off the roof.
-
Step 7
Clip the tiles down to the battens using tile clips in quantities required by the tile's manufacturer for use and storm standards.
