Before you add a room to your house, look at all the expenses you will encounter. Decide what you need to build a laundry room and then price your items before you start. Use these tips to calculate the cost of adding a laundry room.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Make a list of all the items you will need to add a room. Include building materials, appliances, plumbing and decorating costs. Add structural costs if you need to build an extra room. Sketch the room so you can see how you want the room to appear and include all finished details.

  2. Step 2

Ask an expert. Call someone who works in building and construction to determine an accurate cost. Call around your area to find out how much labor costs will be for building the room, installing the machines, putting in plumbing and decorating the room.

  3. Step 3

Calculate the cost of installing plumbing. Decide if you need to hire a plumber or if you can do some or all of the work yourself. Find out the costs of buying the plumbing material. You need to install a washer and a sink for rinsing clothing.

  4. Step 4

Price the washing machine and dryer. You can buy these appliances from a wide range of machines. Small simple washing machines and dryers will cost less than large fancy machines.

  5. Step 5

Visit a hardware store or your local home installation store to find out how much flooring would cost. You want to buy flooring that will stand up to any water that may drip on the floor. Ask someone in the store to recommend a good laundry room floor with a reasonable cost. Make sure you have the measurements of your laundry room so you can calculate the cost of the whole room.

  6. Step 6

Determine the cost of putting up walls. You will need drywall and paint. You can calculate the cost of the materials and do the work yourself or find the price for hiring someone to do the work.

  7. Step 7

Decide if you want an area to hang clothing. You may want to install a clothes line, racks for hanging clothing and shelves for storing laundry soap and cleaning supplies.
