Things You'll Need:
- Circular saw
- Screwdriver
- Drywall saw
- Hammer
- 2 inch wood screws
- Finishing nails
-
Step 1
Make sure the wall you want to use is not load bearing. If you're unsure consult a professional before beginning. Look for an area along the wall that is out of the way of furniture or other decor.
-
Step 2
Select a chest of drawers, remove any overhanging trim on the sides and back with a circular saw. Pry any molding away from the sides and remove the legs by unscrewing, using a saw if necessary. The bottom and side will now have no protrusions and be smooth.
-
Step 3
Measure the chest and transfer the dimensions to the knee wall with a carpenters pencil. Cut out the section of drywall with a drywall saw. Use a hammer to remove the studs in the knee wall as well as any insulation you find.
-
Step 4
Build a support in the knee wall by cutting the removed studs to size. Screw the two bottom supports to the floor and nail together a simple support that's level with the bottom of the opening. This supports the chest once it's in position.
-
Step 5
Set the chest of drawers on the bottom edge of the hole and push it into the wall. Make sure the edge of the chest is flush all the way around and make adjustments as needed.
-
Step 6
Drive 2-inch wood screws through the dresser and into the side studs as well as the bottom supports. This anchors the chest in place and ensures it won't come loose from extended use.
-
Step 7
Install any decorative trim or moldings around the chest with nails. Fill nail holes with putty and sand when dry. Place the drawers into the chest and enjoy the newfound storage.
