How to Prepare for an Endometrial Biopsy

If you are a woman having abnormal bleeding or trouble getting pregnant, your doctor may order an endometrial biopsy. This is a procedure in the doctor's office where she takes a tissue sample from the lining of your uterus, also called the endometrium. The procedure is quick, but can cause some cramping.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Step1
Work with your doctor to determine the best time to perform the test. For abnormal bleeding, it can be done any time. But for infertility testing, the biopsy must be done between day 22 and 24 of your menstrual cycle. This allows the doctor to see if your endometrium is the right consistency and thickness for that time.
Step2
Ask your doctor or nurse to fully explain how the biopsy is performed. You are less likely to be apprehensive if you know what is happening.
Step3
Follow your doctor's instructions so there will be no need to repeat the test. You should not use vaginal medicine or tampons for 24 hours before the procedure. You should not douche during this time, also.
Step4
Insist on a pregnancy test before the biopsy if there is even the slightest chance you may be pregnant. An endometrial biopsy can cause a miscarriage.
Step5
Take some over-the-counter pain medication about 30 minutes before the biopsy. Most doctors recommend ibuprofen.
Step6
Relax during the procedure. If you tense your body, you may feel more cramping. Calm yourself down, and know the biopsy only takes a few seconds.
Step7
Expect some vaginal bleeding for a few days. Use a pad instead of a tampon, and avoid sexual intercourse and strenuous exercise for about a week. You may also have some vaginal soreness.
