Prom dresses, especially the elaborate ones, can be expensive. But it's the most important night of high school, and you want to look fabulous for your date. Find a simple dress, and give it a prom makeover to get the fancy dress of your dreams.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Comb the department stores for a simple dress you can embellish. A straight sheath in a classic color is a good choice. If you get a gown without lots of embellishment, you can probably stay under your budget.

  2. Step 2

Shop the thrift stores if you can't find what you're looking for in the mall. Thrift stores are full of evening gowns and bridesmaid's dresses worn only once.

  3. Step 3

Look through prom magazines to get ideas for decorating your dress. You can probably copy many of the looks without too much trouble.

  4. Step 4

Go to a sewing store for trim. Sequins, beading, lace, rhinestones and tulle are all available by the yard.

  5. Step 5

Attach the trim with small and even stitches. You may be able to use a hot glue gun.

  6. Step 6

Take plenty of pictures. You'll feel proud of your new inexpensive creation.

Tips & Warnings
  • You could also change the actual design of the dress by adding rhinestone straps to a sleeveless dress or turning the hem of a floor length gown into a scalloped one. This does require a little more sewing. Find an expensive seamstress to help you.
  • If you're hesitant about your sewing skills, leave the dress as it is and go for all out glamour with your hair and makeup.
  • Give your dancing shoes glitz by attaching rhinestones or pearls with a hot glue gun. You can do the same to an unadorned bag to give it an evening look.
