How to Look Busy at Work Without Really Working

Your job bores you. You don't even want to go in, but you need the money. There's really nothing to do while you're at work but, for some reason, they keep you on the payroll. Your boss wouldn't approve of you goofing off in an obvious way so you have to look like you're staying busy with real work.

Instructions

    • 1

Keep business papers nearby. That way, it looks like you just finished an assignment. You can also use them to keep your magazines and doodles covered.

    • 2

Print something. If you have your own printer, your co-workers will hear the machine and assume you're working. If there's just a large laser printer in your office, print something a few times a day and walk through the office to retrieve your "work."

    • 3

Wear an expression of frustration, concentration or relief when someone stops by your cube to talk. If you appear like they're interrupting you or like they're giving you a well-needed chit-chat break, they'll think you're hard at work.

    • 4

Open an application or browser window in your computer that's related to work. When you hear someone coming, open the window and start typing or clicking the mouse.

    • 5

Engage in conversation with a friend who works with you. Stop by his cubicle every so often to discuss "business matters" with him. In reality, you're only asking him if he wants to go for a drink after work.

Tips & Warnings

  • Don't get caught not working. Always be prepared with an excuse that makes sense if your boss questions you about what you've been up to.
