Step 1
Choose a scoop neck tank top in a lightweight but strong material. Rayon or polyester work well because they don't stretch when you put heavy items in the bag. Also, consider the neckline of the tank top. Those with front and back necklines that match or are similar in cut work best. Racer-back tanks do not work for this project.
-
Step 2
Cut the tank top apart at the shoulder seams. When reconstructed, this will allow your tote to open widely. If there are no shoulder seams to guide you, fold the shoulders in the center, with even amounts of fabric below your fold, and use the fold line as a cutting line.
-
Step 3
Turn the tank top inside out and stitch the front straps together. Then stitch the back straps together. Use a small seam allowance and a tight stitch. These seams will ultimately support the weight of whatever is put in your tote bag.
-
Step 4
Check your work. When you began, the front of the tank top was stitched to the back of the tank top. Now, the front strap is stitched to the other front strap, and the back is stitched to the other back strap.
-
Step 5
Close the bottom of your bag by stitching across the bottom of the tank top with a straight, tight seam. Stitch along your seam a second time to ensure it is strong.
-
Step 6
Rotate your new tote right side out, and take it on your next shopping trip.
