An exotic pet is any animal that isn't traditionally considered a pet. Your exotic pet could be a monkey, wolf, python or any other animal that makes your neighbors nervous. Caring for an exotic pet can be challenging because you have to deal with the social stigmas that accompany certain species and breeds, but with the right information, you can ensure your pet is healthy and well-adjusted.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Familiarize yourself with the laws in your city and state regarding exotic animals. Some jurisdictions ban certain exotic animals, and you need to know your rights if a complaint is filed. If your exotic animal is illegal and you're not willing to move to keep ownership of your pet, immediately start looking for a qualified owner who can legally adopt the animal. If there are no laws banning exotic animals, find out if your pet will be grandfathered if a law is passed.

  2. Step 2

Find a veterinarian who specializes in the care of your exotic animal's species. This means you might need two vets if your dog's vet doesn't have experience caring for reptiles. Call a local rescue society and ask for recommendations.

  3. Step 3

Join an Internet forum for exotic animal owners. You'll be able to get valuable advice about the health and behavior of your pet from experienced owners, as well as receive emotional support.

  4. Step 4

Advocate for your pet. Many exotic animals are feared because people don't understand the species. Some people might try to harm your pet out of fear. Make an effort to educate people about the species by volunteering at a rescue center or zoo or by giving presentations at a school.

Tips & Warnings
  • Never buy or adopt an exotic animal without doing extensive research on the species. Talk to other owners about what their day-to-day life is like with the animal. Know how big the animal is going to get, and make sure you have the proper space and habitat for it. Many exotic animals are abandoned and euthanized because their owners weren't prepared to take care of them into adulthood.
