Fireworks is an image editing software designed by Macromedia. The software gives users access to high-tech editing options in an easy-to-learn system. When a file is compressed for a JPEG, some information is lost to reduce the file size. Optimize a JPEG file so you can control the amount of information lost.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Step1
Open the Fireworks program from your desktop or the program file in the Start menu.
Step2
Click "File" and choose "Open." Locate the file you want as a JPEG and choose "Open."
Step3
Select "Window" from the menu bar and pick "View Optimize Window." Choose the JPEG option from the drop-down menu. Select "Preview" to see the optimized JPEG with the default settings.
Step4
Choose the triangle next to "Smooth." Move the slider to change the how smooth the picture appears. Normal images work well with the setting at 1 or 2.
Step5
Locate the quality setting and click on the triangle next to it. Move the slider to pick the lowest quality level that still looks good.
Step6
Select the triangle in the upper-right corner of the optimize window to open the menu. Choose one of the options available. Select "Optimize to Size" for JPEGs with a set file size. Choose the "Progressive JPEG" option to make a JPEG that downloads slowly on a Web page. Select "Sharpen Edges" to save the edges and detail.
Step7
Compare the original with the JPEG by selecting the "2-up" tab.
Step8
Select "File" and "Save."
