Turning a dresser into a bathroom vanity is a project that most do-it-yourselfers can handle. Choose a sturdy dresser that is tall enough for this purpose, or consider adding feet to the bottom to bring it up to a comfortable position.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Sturdy dresser
  • Sink
  • Faucet
  • Tape measure
  • Pencil
  • Jigsaw
  • Polyurethane
  1. Step 1

Inspect the dresser to decide where to put the sink. Take out any drawers and supports that get in the way.

  2. Step 2

Lay the template that came with your sink into position on the dresser and draw around it. If your sink didn't come with a template, turn your sink upside down on the dresser and trace its shape onto the dresser.

  3. Step 3

Move to the back of the dresser and trace out the section you'll need to cut away to accommodate the water lines.

  4. Step 4

Use a jigsaw to cut the openings you traced onto the new vanity.

  5. Step 5

Cut the drawers to fit into their positions without interfering with the sink or the plumbing. Consider using only the drawer face and gluing it into place.

  6. Step 6

Slide the vanity into place. Set the sink and faucets into place, and hook up the cold- and hot-water feeds. Call a plumber for help if you're unclear on how to do this.

  7. Step 7

Cover the top of the dresser with at least two coats of waterproof polyurethane to protect it from water damage.

Tips & Warnings
  • Think about attaching the dresser directly to the wall to eliminate stress on the water lines that may occur if the vanity shifts.
