Many people are fascinated by mythical creatures such as mermaids. Because mermaids emerged from myths and fairy tales, you can be as creative as you want in drawing them, including whatever features spring from your imagination. Here are some steps to get you started.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Drawing paper
  • Pens/pencils
  • Painting materials
  1. Step 1

Decide what the purpose of your drawing is going to be. Is it going to be used as a stencil for another craft such as woodworking? Will it be used exclusively as artwork? Such questions determine how much detail you need in your picture and what materials you will use to draw the picture.

  2. Step 2

Determine how large the drawing will be. The size of the drawing may dictate what medium you use to make your drawing.

  3. Step 3

Make a rough sketch in pencil first. You do not have to draw any specific part of the mermaid first. However, you may find it easier to maintain proportion of body parts if you draw top to bottom or left to right.

  4. Step 4

Add the final lines using a pen or marker. These lines form your mermaid figure. Black lines are generally used to form outlines, but you may choose any desirable color.

  5. Step 5

Erase the pencil lines that you used for your rough sketch. If you used a marker for your final lines, make sure the ink is dry before attempting to erase the pencil so that you avoid smudging.

  6. Step 6

Add desirable details to your drawing. You may want to add scales to the mermaid's tail, jewelry, scenic details or other items to complete the picture. Other options include adding a seashell bra, gills or fins. You may also draw wet or dry hair, depending on the scene.
